A Comprehensive Guide to Quilt Labels

Quilters use tags to tell stories about quilts and remember loved ones, including praying, sharing words of wisdom, teaching how to care for quilts, and more.

Can I make a quilt with different types of fabric?

Absolutely! Many of the “great” quilting world blends fiber types of projects to add interest, texture, and overall design to the project. Remember, no quilting police, your quilt will be beautiful and fun as you choose the fabric and fiber to allow.

Where do you put the label on a quilt?

Quilt labels are easy to make and there are many ways to do it. Basically, a quilt label is a piece of cloth that has information about the quilt and the manufacturer and is attached to the back of the quilt. I would say that there are no real rules for quilting, and that certainly applies to quilting labels. Make your label the way you want, put whatever you want on the label and stick it the way you like.

In my opinion, the information you include on the label depends on the end use of the quilt. Maybe it’s a gift, a quilt, or an heirloom. You might put something very different on the label. It’s important to think about what future generations might want to know about quilts.

Some ideas of what you might want to include on the label:

1、The name of the quilt

2、The reason it was made – special occasion – holiday, graduation, wedding, birth, friendship,

3、Personal message

4、Quilter’s name

5、Care instructions

(These are just my personal opinions, not all of them are correct, the information on the quilt can also be put in other content)

Here are some quilt-making ideas to label yourself (see here for more):

1. Draw or embroider words and add decorations such as vines, flowers, or other symbols.

2. Incorporate one or more additional blocks from the top of the quilt into the label.

3, for a frame finish, bundle the label edges like a mini quilt. Sew the leftover binder from the quilt around the edge of the label and then bind the edge to the wrong side. Sew the bound labels on the back by hand, not on the top.

4. To ensure that the label is not easy to be removed from the quilt, you can sew the label on the back cloth and quilt through  .

Embroidered quilt labels

Another good idea is to use the sewing machine’s automatic lettering to design a quilt label. Many machines, including fairly basic ones, have at least an alphabet that you can program and stitch together easily.

Or, why not write with an erasable pen on a piece of cloth and then embroider it by hand with a simple stitch before erasing the pen marks.
